A Beech Dutchess, twin engine plane, similar to the
one pictured crashed at Godfrey Road, near
Richard B. Russell Regional Airport. Floyd County Police
have confirmed Lokesh Venkat, 23, of India, the student pilot
who was flying the plane, and Kwang Yi, 34, of a Duluth address,
who was the instructor, were killed said Chief Deputy Coroner
Tony Cooper.
The plane
was from a flight school in Atlanta
that was in the Rome area for instructional
purposes. It took off and then tried to return
to land. It is not clear whether the plan was to
practice an `engine out` maneuver, or whether the
plane actually lost power. In either case, it was unable to recover
in time to avoid the crash.
Godfrey Road is located off the Old Dalton Road
to the southeast of Russell airport.
The plane was from Atlanta Aviation located on Corsair Drive
in Atlanta at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport. It carried an
instructor and a trainee. Their names have not yet
been released. The student pilot is believed to have
been a foreign national.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun
an investigation of the accident. The investigation
is expected to continue through the weekend. No information
on that investigation is likely to be released until next week.
