The Cedartown Recreation Program is adding another option to its line-up of youth sports: soccer.
“Soccer has been one of those programs that many people have asked for,” said Lee Hayes, Parks and Rec director. “We are excited that we can now offer it and we’re looking forward to having a lot of kids participate.”
Sign-ups for the spring 2016 soccer season will start on Feb. 22 and continue until March 18. Both boys and girls, ages five to 14, can participate. Parents can sign up their children at the Nathan Dean Gym at Bert Wood Park on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Cost is $40 per child.
Soccer is the second-most popular sport in the United States, rivaled only by baseball, according to the US National Soccer Players Association. As with any of the sports programs offered by the Cedartown Recreation Department, involvement in soccer can develop leadership skills and confidence, and it gives kids a good reason to be outdoors and be active, Hayes said.
Currently the Cedartown Recreation Department offers soccer, softball, baseball, basketball, football (both tackle and flag) and cheerleading.
