Cedartown’s football team will still be making the nearly three hour drive to the greater Athens area Friday night for their first round playoff match up, but will be headed to an alternate venue.
The Oconee County Warriors (8-2) finished as the 8-AAA regions champions and will host the Cedartown Bulldogs (2-8) at North Oconee High School.
According to Kevin Yancey, Oconee’s athletics director, the decision to move the game from the Warrior’s home field to North Oconee was due to deplorable field conditions at their home field.
He said they had the safety of both teams in mind when making the decision.
Cedartown head coach Scott Hendrix confirmed the venue change late Thursday night.
Oconee upset Elbert County last week at home 12-7 last week where field conditions deteriorated throughout the game.
The win secured the region championship for the Warriors and the number one seed in the playoffs.
The Cedartown Bulldogs, despite only winning two games in the season, secured a number four seed after a convincing win over Rockmart last week 35-12.
Kickoff of Friday’s game is set for 7:30 PM. Listen live by clicking here starting at 6:00 with the Jefferson’s Cedartown Friday Night Sports Roundtable.
