The GBI has been called in to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred late Friday afternoon in Cedartown.
According to initial reports, Polk County 911 received a call of a heated domestic situation at a Hillside Drive address. A Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy was the first to arrive on the scene at about 5:16 p.m. Friday afternoon.
According to Polk County Deputy Coroner Tony Brazier, the deputy came into contact with an irate subject at the residence.
Brazier said the 18-year-old subject lunged at the deputy, wielding a knife and a baseball bat. The deputy in response drew his firearm and shot him in the chest.
That 18-year-old, now identified as Levi Isaac Weaver of that same Hillside Drive address was transported emergency traffic to Polk Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Weaver’s body has been transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur for an autopsy.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is leading the investigation, which is proper protocol for any officer involved shooting.
The investigation will be continuing into the circumstances of the shooting.
Family members and neighbors told WSB-TV that Weaver was a good kid but he just had anger problems. Another said that police have been called to the house in the past.
