Units of the Polk County Fire Department, along with the Rockmart Fire Department and the Georgia Forestry Commission spent most of Valentines Day battling a woods fire near Braswell Mountain Road and Highway 278.
According to Polk County Fire Chief and EMA Director Randy Lacey, about 80 acres were consumed by the blaze Saturday afternoon. At this time, only two houses are near the fire, but were were not in any danger, according to Lacey. Fire trucks were stationed at the nearby homes in case the situation were to change.
Lacey said Polk County Fire got the call at just after 3:00 PM Saturday afternoon, and had been jointly fighting the blaze with Rockmart and GFC officials.
No word on the cause of the fire, but Lacey said that after several hours, the blaze was under control.
