No illegal substances were found during a discreet, early-morning drug sweep at Cedartown High School.
According to Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome, K-9 units from the Cedartown Police Department, the Polk County Police Department and the Rome Police Department took part in the pre-planned drug sweep of the 1,000-student facility.
The operation was coordinated by Newsome and Cedartown High School Principal Darrell Wetherington. “The K-9 units sniffed lockers, vehicles and the common areas of the facility. We are pleased to report that the operation did not yield any illegal substances,” Newsome said. “Drug sweeps are routinely conducted in an effort to protect our students. We want to ensure that our students are learning in a safe and drug-free environment. Law enforcement works closely with school administration when planning these operations and sweeps are executed with little to no disruption to the students. Our K-9s are never in contact with students; teachers and students are in classrooms, behind closed doors, when our K-9 units move through the halls.”
Newsome reported that today’s sweep was conducted within an hour and was uneventful. “We appreciate the school system and the additional law enforcement agencies working with us to make sure our children are as safe as possible.”
